Apple’s Magic Mouse has received some well-deserved criticism since its launch, and it appears that the company has finally taken note of the issue. The existing Magic Mouse features a charging port underneath the accessory, which means that you can not charge and use it simultaneously. A new report claims that Apple is ‘working’ on a redesigned Magic Mouse with a long-awaited ‘fix.’
Apple is working on a redesigned Magic Mouse, which could see daylight in the next 12 to 18 months at the earliest
In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that Apple has been working on a “full overhaul” of the Magic Mouse in recent months, and the new version with a new design will “better fit the modern era.” While the exact launch date has not been mentioned, the analyst claims the accessory could be announced in the next 12 to 18 months. If the time frame is anything to go by, we can expect the redesigned Magic Mouse to launch in the last quarter of 2025 or the first half of 2026.
Apple has made a major change with the Magic Mouse this year – switching to USB-C from Lightning, allowing users to use the same cable as other latest products. However, it failed to switch the position of the USB-C port, which has been a nuisance to use ever since its announcement. Apple does not want users to use the Magic Mouse while charging, potentially because it would ruin the aesthetics and the experience.
According to Gurman, Apple will not create a standard mouse as it “is looking to create something that’s more relevant while also fixing longstanding complaints—yes, including the charging port issue. “The analyst further claims that the next Magic Mouse will be more ergonomic and comfortable to use. The analyst did not share the exact design details of the Magic Mouse, but it can be presumed that the company will take inspiration from the current alternatives, such as Logitech’s MX Master 3S.
Apple has not updated the design of the Magic Mouse since 2009, and potentially, we will see a complete overhaul instead of minor tweaks. The company did make some notable changes to the accessory, including switching from AA batteries to rechargeable batteries and introducing various color options with the launch of the 24-inch iMac in 2021. This year, the company introduced a USB-C port to the Magic Mouse as part of its transition from Lightning for all products. The new changes could also increase the price of the accessory, but it remains to be seen if the company will offer it as a ‘Pro’ accessory.
